My apologies. There is an error in my piece relating to Margaret Fairlie. Fresh evidence shows that this was NOT the Margaret Fairlie who went on to become the first female professor of any discipline at a Scottish university, being appointed to the chair of obstetrics and gynaecology at St Andrews in 1940.
