I was very sorry to read of the death of Mr Melville. I trained at Birmingham but in my final year (1986) my father died and I had to spend some time in East Sussex to care for my mother. My medical school organised transfer of my final 10 week obstetrics/gynaecology module to Brighton, and I was assigned to Mr Melville. A kinder man I have never met. He helped me through a very difficult time, and I will always be grateful to him. He was also an excellent tutor. My deepest condolences to his wife (whom I also met during my placement) and his family.
