Dear Editor
John highlights the importance in supervision of standing back and resisting the temptation to offer advice/ solutions which attempts to change an individual’s attitude and response.
There is a parallel to this in (medical) management, and the use of Action Learning as a tool to support. Listening to trusted individuals discuss an issue without offering solutions/ judgements, and importantly us actively listening to the discussion about our issue without intervening , allows a new perspective and solution to emerge. Action Learning can seem alien to doctor leaders at first (possibly for the same reasons to which John alludes – we are solution focussed) but is a powerful technique to support complex decision making and resilience.
