A Modern Approach to NHS Security

The week-long incident caused by the WannaCry ransomware attack back in May 2017 cost the NHS almost £100m.
The attack impacted more than 80 trusts, 8% of all GP practices, resulting in 19,000 cancelled appointments. Given the current backlog, disruption of a similar scale would be disastrous to the whole healthcare industry, which only stresses the importance of cyber security in the current climate.
The need to protect our workforce and patients remains a top priority. On the 29th of November, National Health Executive, in partnership with Abnormal Security, hosted a webinar to explore the modern threat landscape, the volume and nature of these attacks and how we can be protected moving forward.
The National Health Executive’s Jack Howe presided over the event, which was attended by James Dunn, Public Sector Lead at Abnormal Security, Hanis Hairuddin Cyber Security Manager at South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and Kelvyn Hipperson Joint Chief Information Officer at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.
The discussion looked at how traditional defences used to defend NHS email systems fail in the face of modern attack strategies, why email attacks are expanding at an alarming rate, and what NHS security teams can do to better protect against evolving attacker approaches.
You can catch up on the conversation by watching the on-demand webinar at the top of this page.
