Dear Editor
Few of us could have failed to notice the juxtaposition of this article on Dr Udoye’s experience on page 173 of the paper BMJ being followed on page 174 by an article claiming the UK need for doctors like Dr Udoye to leave their countries to become British GPs! Do our black doctor colleagues coming to the UK know that they have double the chance of being referred to the regulator than their white counterparts? That this referral could be for a trivial thing, such as a failure to properly complete a form, while no attempt at local resolution is made? Then once exonerated by the independent tribunal, the GMC can still pursue that doctor for years, saddling him/her with a massive bill for a High Court hearing and ruining their career, heath and family in the process? Perhaps the BMJ should have appended a warning to their article inviting overseas doctors as, clearly, this would not be the welcome they would be expecting. I have stood outside the GMC in Euston Road, London for 6 weeks to highlight Dr Udoye’s case and will continue to do so until he and doctors like him are treated fairly by our regulator. Inviting such colleagues without clearly stating these potential hazards is just reckless.
