Dear Editor,
The GMC has been crying out for reform for ages. Most doctors I know have been left aghast, stupefied and incredulous by the way it appears to handle our colleagues with a very heavy hand. It feels like an organisation whose remit is to punish the medical profession in order for it to show that its being even handed. Whilst we’re mentioning unaccountable organisations, most of the article – the thrust of it, at least – could well be directed at the CQC. They deliver a service for the public in the field of health and social care so fulfil the criteria for being inspected by … the CQC. Yet when I asked them who manages this role some years ago I got no reply.
