Dear Editor

If the GMC were referred to itself, for flagrant misdeeds, lack of insight, contrition, remediation, remorse etc, one has to wonder how long it would take them to strike themselves off the medical register?

Not very long, one imagines.

It is not however a matter for triteness or trivialisation. Many doctors and dentists have had nervous breakdowns, or committed suicide, under the Sauron-like gaze of this recalcitrant regulator.

Sadly, with the demise of proper governance in the UK as our political system fails, there is little prospect of anyone doing anything about it. Jeremy Hunt, the present Chancellor of the Exchequer (at least as I type this email), had some sensible ideas for reform, but, he is long gone now from a relevant sphere of influence. The other “here today, gone tomorrow” politicians understand little, and care less.

I only hope one day someone will grasp the nettle and “rid us of this troublesome regulator” – but until the GMC understands that its faults are its own personal, professional and corporate responsibility, there seems little prospect of useful change.
